题目:The Human Cervical Spine (Neck) – Response of Bone, Ligament and the Head-Neck Complex to Dynamic Loading

内容摘要:
Injury to the human neck can arise from sudden dynamic loads, such as those experienced in accidents and in extreme situations like pilot ejection from an aircraft. This presentation comprises three-parts; the first deals with the mechanical properties of cancellous (internal) bone extracted from vertebrae of the human cervical spine (neck). A viscoelastic constitutive model is also developed as an approximation of the behavior observed. The second part of this presentation focuses on the static and dynamic load-deformation characteristics of ligament from the cervical spine. A method for dynamic testing of soft specimens, involving modifications to a Split Hopkinson Bar, is introduced. The third portion describes the establishment of an experimental technique to induce a prescribed upward acceleration-time load on the entire human head-neck complex. The objective is to replicate the initial loading history experienced at the base of the cervical spine during pilot ejection from a cockpit. The resulting experimental acceleration-time responses correlate closely with the desired profile. High speed photography is used to capture visual images of the ejection process to examine the dynamic response of the specimens and to derive kinematic data on vertebrae motion during high-rate loading.

报告人简介:
Victor Shim is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and currently one of the Vice-Deans of the Faculty of Engineering. His research interests include impact mechanics, dynamic behaviour of materials, cellular materials, ballistic resistance of fabrics, response of components/products to shock loads, and stress wave propagation in materials/structures. He established the Impact Mechanics Laboratory at NUS to facilitate research into the impact, ballistic and high-speed mechanical behaviour of materials, components and products. He is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Impact Engineering, a registered Professional Engineer in Singapore, a Senior Member of the Institution of Engineers Singapore, and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has received awards for Teaching Excellence and Innovative Teaching, and has also held numerous management appointments at University, Faculty and Department levels.
