About the speaker:
Professor Tamura has had significant research achievements over a wide range of wind engineering problems. Especially noteworthy are his innovative works on universal equivalent static wind load, evaluation techniques of damping and its database, perception thresholds for building vibrations, and a mathematical model of vortex-induced oscillation. His outstanding achievements have been internationally recognized, and he was awarded the most prestigious Jack E. Cermak Medal by the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) in 2004, and his many other awards/prizes are evidence of his great academic contribution. He is a member of the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ) and is a member of the Science Council of Japan (SCJ). Both of these are very prestigious organizations, and only top-class academicians can become members. He has also been recognized as a world leading professor and was elected as President of the International Association for Wind Engineering (IAWE) in Cairns in 2007. After completion of his four-year-tenure as the IAWE President, he was re-elected in Amsterdam in 2011 for another four-year term. Nobody has ever been previously re-elected to this position. This is definitely evidence of his high reputation and the fullest confidence of world researchers and engineers. Professor Tamura has contributed to the society by way of various social activities. One of these is the establishment of the International Thematic Group for Wind-related Disaster Risk Reduction (IG-WRDRR) under the auspices of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) Secretariat, and he was elected as the first Chairman of the IG-WRDRR in 2009. He is also serving as Honorary/Advisory/Adjunct Professor at overseas universities including the University of Notre Dame (US), Opole Technical University (Poland) and many Chinese universities such as Beijing Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Tongji University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and so on. Thus, Professor Tamura’s contributions to the public have been spectacular and internationally significant.
