Abstract:
Numerical results will be given for the generation of energy cascades to small scales from the interaction and reconnection of very long anti-parallel vortices for three types of flows: Superfluids, Navier-Stokes turbulence and stably stratified fluids. All are known to generate an energy cascade to small scales and a -5/3 kinetic energy spectrum in experiments and large isotropic forced or decaying simulations, but it has been very difficult to generate evidence for a cascade using simple combinations of initial vortices.
