Prof. Sergei Chernyshenko of Imperial College London and Prof. Zhong Shi of Shanghai Jiao Tong University visited LTCS
Recently, Prof. Sergei Chernyshenko of Imperial College London and Prof. Zhong Shi of Shanghai Jiao Tong University visited State Key Laboratory for Turbulence and Complex Systems of Peking University and gave seminar talks on turbulence.
Prof. Chernyshenko graduated from the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Moscow State University in 1977 and received his Ph.D. and professorship degrees in 1983 and 1995 from the same university. After 20 years at the Institute of Mechanics of the Moscow State University, Prof. Sergei holds a chair at the Department of Aeronautics of Imperial College London from 2007 to the present. He conducts research in theoretical fluid dynamics. Dr. Zhong Shi is professor of School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is a Senior Visiting Scholar from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences(2012 Fall Winter).
Prof. Sergei Chernyshenko and Professor Zhong Shi gave two wonderful academic reports to the teachers and students of the LTCS. Prof. Chernyshenko introduced extrapolating turbulence to higher Reynolds numbers and the bounds for time averages of solutions to equations of fluid mechanics and other dynamical systems.
Prof. Zhong Shi, based on his visiting, teaching, and research experience in the United Kingdom, introduced an overview of the fluid mechanics and turbulence schools of University of Cambridge, represented by G. I. Taylor and G. K. Batchelor. Then he reported the progress and results of experimental, theoretical and numerical simulations of turbulence in a stable layered two-layer flow.
The series of lectures attracted many faculty and students. After lectures, LTCS faculty and students had stimulating discussions with the two invited speakers. During the visit, the two professors discussed scientific problems and future collaboration with LTCS.
