Dr. Xiaojue Zhu from University of Twente Gave an Invited Talk

On March 15, 2018, Dr. Xiaojue Zhu from University of Twente gave an invited talk titled "Exploring the ultimate of Rayleigh-Bénard and Taylor-Couette turbulence". Dr. Xiaojue Zhu obtained his PhD in February, 2018 from the university of Twente in the Netherlands. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Physics of Fluids group of the University. Prof. Yantao Yang of Peking University hosted the seminar.

First, Dr. Zhu made the introduction through a picture of turbulent convection on Jupiter. Subsequently, Dr Zhu shared the latest results on fully developed turbulence, including Rayleigh-Bénard and Taylor-Couette flows with many similar features. Through the two-dimensional numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence, the transition reached to the ultimate regime, namely at critical Rayleigh number Ra*= 1013. Moreover, Dr. Zhu described how the emission of thermal plumes enhances the global heat transport. Finally, Dr. Zhu described how wall roughness greatly enhances the overall transport properties and the corresponding scaling exponents associated with wall-bounded turbulence in Taylor-Couette turbulence.

After the lecture, LTCS faculty and students had a stimulating discussion with Dr. Xiaojue Zhu.
