Abstract
Vascular and related diseases account for >50% of all unnatural deaths in western countries. In the circulation system, endothelial cells (ECs) spread the entire luminal surface of blood vessels. The surface of ECs is covered by a hair-liked thin layer (a few hundred nm thick), which is negatively charged, known as the glycocalyx. As the outmost interface between the blood vessel and blood, the endothelial glycocalyx mediates the interaction between the blood and the endothelium, and plays a crucial role as an endothelial mechanotransducer. Hence, it involves in the initiation and progress of vascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis. In the present study, we compared the endothelial glycocalyx in vivo and in vitro. A time dependent trend has been discovered as a criterion of healthy glycocalyx in vitro. The mechanical properties of glycocalyx was also been demonstrated as one of the indicators.
