It has been difficult to compute eigenmodes for photonic crystals with metallic components included in the periodic units. The existence of surface plasmon modes presents the major difficulty not only because of the localized nature of the modes but also of the apparent necessity of handling a nonlinear eigenvalue problem. In this talk, we show that by introducing an interfacial operator in the finite-difference framework, the problem for computing surface plasmon modes can be formulated in the format of standard eigenvalue problems. The key element of the approach is an interfacial variable introduced along the interface between the metal and the surrounding dielectric material, which represents the local strength of the surface phonon modes along the interface. The eigenmodes can be computed directly without the need of examining transmission spectra as in the finite-difference time-domain method, or locating the mode frequency by testing an auxiliary function in other methods. The method will first be described with the free-electron model for one and two-dimensional arrays, and then generalized in a different setting to waveguide problems for plasmonic crystals in which the dielectric function of the metallic components can be arbitrary in frequency.
