Abstract
This presentation will begin with a description of the field coupled constitutive behavior and its relationship to the perovskite type crystal structure in PMN-xPT single crystals.  Experimental results include combined stress and electric field loading. The results indicate that there are multiple possible field driven phase transformations that can take place in these materials. This has implications for micromechanical based constitutive laws used for ceramics. "Domain Engineering" will be described. This is a process of identifying certain crystal cuts with stable domain structures. This leads to an interest in modeling domain structures using a phase field approach, an active area of research. Field coupled Fracture Mechanics gives insight into some of the observed reliability issues such as electric field driven crack growth.  The field coupled fracture problem will be described and experimental results presented.  Results of preliminary computational work on field coupled fracture will be presented.
About the speaker
Dr. Lynch served on the faculty of the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Inst. Tech., from September, 1995 through September 2007 at which point he joined the faculty of the University of California Los Angeles as a professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.  Dr. Lynch’s research has branched into several areas related to ferroelectric materials including field coupled fracture mechanics, micro-electro-mechanics, and ferroelectric device development. Dr. Lynch’s current research program continues to focus on constitutive law development and finite element implementation in support of numerous sensing and actuation applications.
Dr. Lynch is currently Chair of the ASME Aerospace Division Executive Committee.  He recently launched the SMASIS Conference on Smart Materials and Structures. He has been honored with the receipt of an NSF CAREER award, an ONR Young Investigator award, an ASEE educator award, is a Fellow of ASME, and was nominated by his Georgia Tech students and subsequently awarded the “Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching"
