Abstract
Since it was invented two decades ago, scanning probe microscopy (SPM) has been extensively used in material science, life science, physics, micro/nano fabrication, and a variety of industries, especially in microelectronics and data storage.  In  this report, we will discuss the underlying physics and engineering implementation for high performance SPM. Following that, we will give some examples on implementation of different property measurements on SPM. 1) Thermal analysis has been used in material researches for a long time. 2) Nano-mechanical properties characterization is critical for many applications, including material engineering, life science, medical and researches. 3) Ferroelectric/piezoelectric materials have attracted more and more attention due to their applications in nano-electronic devices, data storage, dynamic MEMS. Examples on this aspect will also be discussed in this report.
 
About the Speaker
Dr Wanxin SUN holds a PhD degree in Physics, M.Eng. and B.Eng. degrees in precision metrology and instrumentation of Tianjin University. During his research career as PhD candidate and post-doctoral fellow, he worked on near-field optics and its applications in semiconductor fabrication in National University of Singapore. After that, he migrated to Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, where he devoted himself into bioimaging, bio analysis and tissue engineering. He has developed several microscopic techniques, published more than 40 papers in international journals, and has been inventor of several US patents. Besides his own research, he is also active in relevant societies and takes the duty of chairing sessions in relevant international conferences. After he joined Veeco in December of 2006, Dr Sun is responsible for application development and technical support of AFM in Asia Pacific region.
