Is Our Seismic Code Adequate? – A Geotechnical Engineering Perspective
报告人 Dr. Jun Yang
Department of Civil Engineering, The University of Hong Kong
报告内容摘要:
The Wenchuan, China earthquake of May 12, 2008 caused tremendous damage to human causalities and infrastructures. Engineers, researchers as well as the publics are increasingly concerned that whether our existing codes for the seismic design of buildings and structures fully account for large-magnitude earthquakes. This seminar attempts to address to some extent this concern from the geotechnical engineering perspective. Similarities and differences between the seismic codes currently used in China and in the United States will be discussed. Particular attention will be given to the design earthquake motion, site classification and site effects since these factors play a vital role in the performance of engineering structures under earthquake environment. Several issues arising from the comparative study and requiring serious consideration in future revisions of the codes will also be discussed.
报告人简介:
Dr. Yang is currently an associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, The University of Hong Kong. His research interests cover a range of subjects in geomechanics and earthquake engineering, and he has published widely in leading journals in this field. He was a recipient of the Humboldt Fellowship Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2001 and the Outstanding Young Researcher Award from the University of Hong Kong in 2007. He was on an ASCE team to conduct field investigations of the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008.
